If she had brought sharper tools, the seal would have yielded at once, yet memory of the beach trek had convinced her pack was heavy enough. Wind stiffened her jacket, and foam climbed the pilings in uneven bursts. She unfastened a belt buckle, slid the metal tongue under a loosened plank, and leaned her weight. The plank bent halfway, then snapped back, scattering tiny crabs across the planks. The tide already covered the first two boards of the pier, and spray peppered her cheeks in rapid bursts.

At last she looped the crowbar through a frayed mooring chain and used the pier post as leverage; the crate’s lid lifted with a sharp sigh as ancient nails surrendered.
