Maya balanced a wicker basket while Elliot walked beside her in the orchard. Together they hunted ripe plums for a pie that waited in their town's kitchen. Endless rows of trees faced them, and afternoon light slipped between the branches. On the ground, hundreds of round plums rolled like little marbles across soft grass. One fruit slid beneath Maya's boot, and she began to stumble, arms waving for balance. A second basket was kicked sideways by a rolling plum. A branch that hung too low brushed Elliot's hair, so his head jerked back. The pair laughed, yet their baskets remained nearly empty. They have explored orchards before, but this path felt narrower than any earlier route.

Elliot spotted a wooden crate that provided higher ground, and he climbed onto it first. From that perch he noticed a faded blanket curled under leaves. Bewildered stripes twisted across the cloth in the shade. A soft mound beneath the fabric bulged outward. He lifted one corner, and extra-ripe plums tumbled out like hidden treasure. Maya knelt, her nose close to the fruit, breathing deeply to savor the sugary scent. The surprise filled both baskets quickly, yet another problem appeared. The crate tipped as Elliot stepped down, sending the fruit wobbling near the edge. He spread his arms, redirecting every rolling sphere into Maya's waiting basket instead of the grass. When the last plum settled, the orchard grew still. The two friends walked toward the gate side by side.
