English 原文
The science fair promised a groundbreaking mix of machines and illusions, and Maya refused to let their booth fall behind. She and Ben carried a paper sphere taller than a bicycle into the empty gym, drawing streaks of paint across their sleeves. Maya had sketched the design weeks earlier; galaxies curled over the thin layers like spilled ink. A slim steel beam had been installed by the janitor before dawn, exactly three meters above the floor. Their plan was simple: suspend the sphere so it drifted between the planet models. Warm air hummed through a ceiling vent, adding a faint, ethereal shimmer to the dust floating around them.
Maya steadied a folding ladder while Ben climbed, nylon thread coiled around his wrist. The first knot slipped as soon as he released it, and the sphere bumped her shoulder, leaving a purple smear. He tried again with thicker cord, yet the ladder wobbled, and both of them braced the rungs until the vibration eased. If the beam had been lower, their work would have finished sooner, but each extra stretch unbalanced the frame. On the third attempt, a sudden draft made the sphere levitate for a breath, the string dangling uselessly beneath it. Ben’s eyebrows jumped, then he whispered a quick count, timing the rising air. The idea formed silently between them: use the vent itself instead of more cord.
They fixed two almost invisible strands to the ceiling, leaving enough slack for movement, then angled the vent louvers downward. The warm current bounced against the sphere, kept it suspended, and set slow rotations across its painted constellations. Light from the skylight mingled with that motion, turning the surface into an ethereal night sky no visitor would expect in midday. By the time other teams arrived, whispers traced the gym about an unprecedented display that moved without motors. Curious hands waved below the sphere, finding nothing but air and the soft hiss of the vent. Maya wiped the last smear from her sleeve. The janitor had been watching from the doorway, a grin hidden under his cap. Above them, the lantern hung quietly in the late afternoon light.
