Milo stepped under the striped canopy of the afternoon street market, chasing the idea of a gift for his younger brother. Paint had faded on the wooden signposts; fresh graffiti curled beside older scratches, showing how many summers had passed here. Sweet smoke from iron pans drifted above crowded stalls, mixing with citrus peel and distant sea salt. Somewhere behind the hum, quick bursts of laughter snapped like small fireworks. Milo had already visited three tables, yet each bright gadget looked expensive or breakable. He hoped to discover something sturdy, something that could survive a child’s backpack on the walk to school.

A glimmer caught his eye near a corner where tarpaulin sagged under last night’s rain. A box of forgotten toys stood half-open; most pieces were missing wheels or buttons. He pulled out a wooden whale no longer than his hand. The paint along its tail had been chipped away, but faint indigo still clung to the grain. When Milo lifted it, fine dust clouded the air and settled on his sleeves. The vendor glanced over but said nothing; the corner had been ignored by almost everyone. If Milo had arrived earlier, the market might have felt quieter, yet the whale would probably still have waited, hidden beneath cracked marbles.

Resourceful fingers nudged the wheels under the whale’s belly, and they refused to move. He searched the box again, fished out a bent nail, and pressed it gently between the axles. The first attempt jammed; his thumb slipped, leaving a pale scrape on the wooden flank. On the second try, he angled the nail differently, and one wheel turned half a circle before stopping. Milo squatted, brushed more dust away, and noticed that candle wax had been poured along the axle at some point; it had dried into a rough collar. Using the edge of a coin, he chipped the wax until it cracked. Both wheels spun, and the whale coasted the length of a folded canvas, bumping into a pyramid of wrapped treats. The polished wooden whale rested inside the box.
