She loved shrill wooden calls that filled rooms like early birdsong. Stalls crowded both sides of the path, offering abundant fabrics, steaming buns, and painted toys. Milo had traced this route every winter, yet nothing ever seemed the same twice. Wind tugged at canvas roofs while voices rode the cold air in bright, overlapping ribbons.

The first whistle he spotted had been carved from pearwood, its wings inked in blue; it had been carved by an artisan whose reputation traveled far beyond the river towns. A trader lifted it toward the light, and the slender beak gleamed. Coins clinked on the table before Milo could speak, and the piece vanished into a woolen pocket. He turned to another stall where simpler goods lay in wooden trays. If he had arrived earlier, the choice might have been wider. A smooth whistle waited there, but the price no longer matched his coin, even though the merchant called it relatively inexpensive compared with the vanished masterpiece.

Milo drifted deeper between stalls, shoulders tightening against the sharpening wind. A crate sat near a steaming pot where wholesome broth bubbled for passers-by. Inside the crate lay spare parts, scraps, and one small whistle with a fine crack along the tail. He lifted it and blew softly; an unexpected chord fluttered out, fuller than the earlier pieces. The vendor shrugged, then waved at the broth, as if sound and soup belonged in the same bargain, and accepted the remaining coins without counting. Milo slipped the whistle into his glove and followed the scent of broth through falling snow. Snowflakes rested on the whistle's polished beak.
