English 原文
Steam curled above a dented pot while Leo arranged herbs on the tiny kitchen table. The chopping board had been positioned near the open window, and a cool breeze scattered the scent of parsley across the hallway. Mira stepped in, rubbing her hands; the bathroom at the end of the corridor still held lukewarm water she had drawn for washing carrots. "A good soup might break the ice with the new neighbor," Leo murmured, lifting a crooked ladle. They planned to fill two bowls, then carry them upstairs as a welcome gift, along with a small pot of mint rooted in fresh earth.
The plan stalled at the first slice. The knife skidded over the carrot’s glossy skin; it refused to chop vegetables cleanly. If the blade had been sharper, the orange coins would have gathered quickly, but instead they scattered in ragged shapes. Mira swapped tools, pressing a serrated bread knife into service. Progress resumed until a soft clink echoed inside the mint pot. A single pebble had wedged beneath the roots, tilting the whole plant. Water sloshed over the rim and dark streaks raced across the counter. Their timetable shrank while Leo spooned soil away, and Mira dabbed the puddle with a towel that the wind kept folding back onto the floor.
Footsteps approached before the soup reached a boil. The corridor door creaked, and the new neighbor, Drew, paused at the threshold, eyebrows lifting at the messy scene. An unexpected burble sounded behind them as the bathroom door drifted open; the tap they thought closed released a playful stream that bounced in the sink. Drew laughed, rolled up sleeves, and without a word lifted the ragged carrot slices into the pot. The accidental teamwork finished what polite introductions could not. Steam rested above two bright bowls on the countertop.
