The Stone in the Stew-

English 原文
Long lines of afternoon sun crossed the community garden table, showing rings where countless bowls had once stood. The bench beside it had been painted by volunteers many summers earlier, and flakes of green curled away from the grain. Liam set a battered crockpot in the center; inside, a substantial kale stew bubbled softly, promising warmth. A faint hum floated from distant traffic, while moist earth released a sharp, pleasant scent near the compost heap. He had always hoped to bring neighbours together with food, so he checked the temperature and waved to families gathering around.
Steam soon clouded the glass lid, yet when Liam tried to lift it, the knob twisted loosely in his fingers. If he had noticed the loosened screw earlier, he would have tightened it before cooking, but now the metal threads slipped uselessly. He pressed a towel against the hot rim; the lid shifted, then stuck as condensed broth cooled along the edge. Children jostled nearby, sniffing the air, and adults formed an eager half-circle, their plates already raised. Liam searched the supply crate for a proper utensil, but found only forks and a cracked spatula bending under its own weight.
Without a ladle, serving seemed impossible. Then his foot nudged a dusty cooler beneath the bench. Inside, a long-handled scoop had been forgotten under the plates, its metal bowl still shining. He tightened the crockpot knob with a coin, the lid finally coming free on a hiss of fragrant steam. Green ribbons of kale rolled across the surface, and the stew now looked as thick as wet clay. Liam dipped the scoop, but the bowl scraped something solid. A small, painted stone emerged, showing faded flowers and the date of last year’s spring fair. Someone had slipped it inside as a secret bookmark of time. Laughter rippled through the circle, and the smooth stone rested in his damp palm under the afternoon light.
