Late afternoon light fell across the school kitchen. Leo placed a metal bowl on the counter, while Maya arranged measuring cups around it. Their goal was clear: bake enough chocolate cookies for tomorrow’s fair. Flour, cocoa, and butter already rested inside the bowl, yet the last scoop of sugar had vanished. The only full jar stood on the top shelf that touched the window, right beside a swallows’ nest woven from straw and string. Leo dragged a wobbling stool below the shelf. Feathers shifted as he reached upward, so he slowed his hand. After a careful stretch, the jar was lifted down, and both friends smiled at their quiet success.

When the lid turned, coarse crystals rolled over Leo’s palm. Salt, not sugar, sparkled under the lamps. Someone has reused the jar; the science club’s visiting scientist had tested seawater in it during lunch. A warm breath of steam drifted above the shiny stoves, and faint vanilla mixed with it. Leo and Maya stared at the spilled salt, then their shoulders dropped in sync. Space on the narrow counter was tight, so they negotiate movement without words, sliding bowls aside until a cupboard door could open. A small bottle of honey appeared. A quick agreement formed; honey became the new ingredient. Maya poured a golden ribbon into the batter, and Leo folded it through the dark mixture. Minutes later, trays cooled on a rack, and round cookies waited, shining softly in the fluorescent light.
