Its absence tilted every other piece, so the arch collapsed twice, scattering crumbs of mortar across the plans taped beneath.

A single bulb hung above them. Behind its cloudy glass, the filament glowed orange, pulsed, and dimmed again, throwing restless shadows over shelves. Smell of metal mingled with faint earth from trays where lettuce sprouted for the botanical wing. Leo checked numbered crates; hinges squeaked, lids resisted, and his sleeve brushed a bronze artifact shaped like a curled leaf. No keystone appeared. While Maya steadied the arch stones for the third time, Leo dragged a plastic tub away from the lunch corner. A forgotten salad toppled, and crisp lettuce leaves slid across the tiles. Under them, a tarnished silver goblet rolled toward his boot. He lifted it; a wedge of carved sandstone hid inside, exactly the right width. The goblet must have been used as an improvised paperweight months before. Maya’s mouth opened without sound when the wedge settled between her palms. She pressed it atop the arch; side blocks shifted inward, and weight locked everything tight. Evening light rested on the completed arch.
