Milo pushed open the narrow service door to the deserted upper corridor of the library. He had stored a broad ceramic tile there last month. He hoped it could serve as a stable base for his science-fair project. A faint, musty draft brushed along the corridor, carrying the smell of old paper. Several heavy beams supported the slanted roof high above the dusty floor. Between them, scraps of timber and metal formed a messy pile of forgotten resources. A faded mural stretched across one wall; its narrative unfolded through chipped images of distant harbors and striped sails. Milo set his backpack down and began carefully moving loose boards aside.

Milo spotted the tile half-buried beneath a splintered crate, yet the crate refused to slide across the dusty floor. A twisted iron rod had been driven through its slats and pinned the wood against a beam. He tried lifting one corner, but the sharp rod scraped the ceramic and pressed the tile even lower. If he had remembered gloves, the dust would have bothered him less, yet his bare hands kept working. He slid a supportive wooden strip under the crate, leaned backward, and used his weight as a makeshift lever. The crate shifted a few centimetres, then settled back with a dull thud that echoed along the corridor. Stale air pressed against his cheeks; the narrow window above had been painted shut years earlier.

After several more pushes, the rod loosened just enough for Milo to drag the tile free. Its underside revealed a small wooden panel resting in a shallow recess beneath the crate’s shadow. A quick shiver ran across his shoulders, and he tapped the panel until one edge lifted with a soft crack. Under the panel, rows of miniature wooden arches lined a square pit like a forgotten model city. Thin dust sheets drifted away, exposing markings that resembled the careful touch of an architect shaping columns. The hidden structures balanced on tiny pillars, yet none connected to the tile Milo had come to collect. Light from his phone pooled over the silent quarter-scale streets.

他發現那塊磚半掩在破裂木箱下方，木箱卻在地板上紋絲不動。一根扭曲鐵條穿過箱板，把箱體卡在橫梁旁。他試著抬起一角，但尖鐵條刮到瓷面，又把磚壓得更低。若是帶了手套，灰塵就不會這麼惹人煩；然而他雙手赤裸，仍不停操作。他把一根支撐用木條塞到箱底，身體後仰，當成臨時槓桿。木箱移動幾公分，又伴隨沉悶聲落回原位。淤陳空氣貼住面頰，因為頭頂窄窗多年前已被油漆封死。

再推了幾次後，鐵條終於微微鬆動，米洛得以將磚拖出。磚的背面露出一塊薄木板，安靜躺在淺槽內的陰影裡。一陣戰慄掠過肩頭，他敲了敲木板，直到一側發出輕微斷裂聲翹起。木板下，一排排袖珍木拱圍成方形凹坑，宛如遺忘的模型城市。薄薄灰層漂散，顯露出彷彿建築師雕琢柱子的細痕。隱藏的結構穩穩支在細柱上，卻與米洛原本要拿走的磚沒有任何連結。手機光線瀰漫，靜靜覆在微縮街道。
