Rowan balanced a long parcel under one arm and stepped into the stone enclave between two tall workshops. The shortcut often saved several blocks, yet it always demanded careful footing. At the juncture where three narrow lanes met, a wide clay basin caught rainwater from a crooked gutter. Today a street performer slapped a tambourine beside it, his heels drumming the flagstones in a jubilant rhythm that bounced off the walls and startled pigeons into flight.

Rowan threaded through the small audience and aimed for the passage beyond the basin. A sudden swirl of wind pushed the performer’s hat into the water with a soft plop. He lunged; his fingers missed; the brim spun just out of reach. Rowan crouched, planning to scoop it up, but the rim of the basin felt slick. Her grip slipped, and the vessel wobbled instead of tilting. Water sloshed over the edge, racing across the uneven stones and soaking a stack of folded canvas nearby. From the shadows of an upper window, the neighborhood hermit—rarely seen, beard like tangled rope—leaned outward, surprised by the splash. His elbow knocked a small wooden crate from the sill. The crate burst open on the descent, scattering dozens of bright marbles that danced over the wet pavement. Children in the crowd broke formation and chased the rolling orbs, their feet sending new ripples through every puddle.

The basin still quivered. Rowan planted both palms, steadied it, and eased the performer’s hat free. Marbles continued their descent, clicking against stone, funneling toward the drain that marked the enclave’s lowest point. A few lodged at the grate; others pinged off and settled. The impromptu game drew laughter upward, and even the bearded observer retreated with shoulders shaking—a silent acknowledgement of the scene below. As the last marble settled, the wind lost strength, the performer reclaimed his damp hat, and a narrow river of runoff guided the remaining beads into the grate with neat finality. Water glimmered under the quiet arch.

羅恩夾著細長的包裹，走進兩棟工坊之間的石頭小院。這條捷徑常能省下好幾條街，但腳步稍不留神就會打滑。在三條窄巷匯合之處，一只寬大的陶盆接住傾斜雨槽流下的水。今天，一位街頭藝人在旁邊拍打手鼓，歡快的節奏在牆面間彈跳，把鴿子都嚇得飛起。
