English 原文
Cara and Leo pushed the research shed’s warped door until rusty hinges yielded. A glacial wind slid under the gap and rattled loose paper on a bench. At the center of the bench rested a drone half‐buried in dust. A pale arctic fox circled the threshold, ears twitching at every metallic clang. Cara lifted the drone; its body had been cracked by earlier landings on the tundra, yet a solid state drive still glimmered inside the casing. She aimed to rescue whatever climate images the drone had stored. Leo unfolded a small toolkit, but the first screw refused to turn; the compartment had been sealed by a thin rim of ice.
Heated breath fogged their goggles while they tried different bits. When the screwdriver slipped again, the drone jerked, and the fox jumped back, snow scattering beneath quick paws. Cara rubbed her hands, then pressed the shaft of the tool against a pocket warmer. On the third try the screw finally loosened, dropping onto the floorboards where the fox nudged it with a cautious nose. The drive came free, though its connector sat bent at an awkward angle. Their laptop, balanced on an old crate, rejected the connection twice. If the cable had aligned at once, they would have copied the files already, yet frustration hung in their shoulders. Leo straightened the pins with a credit card edge, and in due course the screen flickered alive.
Lines of blurred thumbnails crawled across the monitor, but half the images remained unreadable. Cara wished the drone had landed upright months earlier; a crash on frozen permafrost had clearly bruised its memory. Outside, the fox stepped into clearer light, pausing whenever loose plywood creaked behind the friends. They let the transfer continue, knowing some pictures might survive, others not. A single green light rested on the screen beside the quiet drive.
