English 原文
Eliot paced across the silent exhibition hall, glancing at cracked display cases and faded placards that spoke of decades without care. A glass stairwell waited at the rear, its metal rail speckled with rust. Known among friends as a connoisseur of historical glasshouses, he carried a small lamp on a long power cable coiled over his shoulder. The lobby’s sockets still worked, so he plugged in, then started to ascend toward the roof where an abandoned greenhouse once crowned the museum. With every step the lamp’s glow revealed flaking paint, initials carved years earlier, and a trail of dry leaves that had blown in through broken windows.
Halfway up, the cable snagged on an iron finial. Eliot halted, tugged, and the lamp jerked from his hand before clattering down two steps. He crouched, gathered the cable, and eased it over the finial’s sharp edge. The second pull freed the line, yet the bulb flickered, casting an uneven circle that seemed to shrink and grow against the walls. A sudden creak vibrated through the frame; loose panels swayed, scattering paint dust over his coat. He steadied the lamp, exhaled, and continued upward while wind hissed through missing panes, carrying the scent of damp earth from somewhere above.
The greenhouse door stood ajar. Hinges rasped as he nudged it wider, and warm, moist air rolled into the stairwell. Inside, vines had risen past cracked pots and wire shelves, flourishing despite neglect. Rose-colored orchids clung to steel beams; ferns ribboned across the floor, hiding tiles beneath living carpet. An ornate chandelier, once the centerpiece of evening lectures, hung crookedly under the glass roof. Nesting material filled its crystal cups, and a small bird burst from the twigs as Eliot stepped closer, wings beating inches from his cheek before vanishing through a gap in the rafters.
He paused near a fractured column where water dripped in slow rhythm into a mossy basin. Beneath the moss lay rusted plant labels, lettering dissolved until only faint grooves remained. Shards of earlier seasons’ glass lay between rootlets that had pried them loose. Far above, a storm cloud drifted over the skylight, dulling the room’s brightness. Dust hung over the glass rafters while green tendrils pressed against the panes.
