English 原文
Milo crossed the meadow while morning shadows still lay long on the grass. A small wooden footbridge arched over the stream ahead; its rustic planks flexed under each step and sent a soft creak toward the trees. Beyond the bridge stood an abandoned pump house whose cracked roof offered an open view of the sky. He raised a hand against the bright disc overhead, checking the time. A partial eclipse would reach its peak before noon, and the platform on that roof was the only clear spot for kilometers. Flat stones lined the path, but room to sit was scarce, so he hurried.
The narrow ladder fixed to the pump house wall refused to move at first. Milo tugged twice; rust crumbled, yet the bolts held. On the third pull, one side dropped a finger-width, enough for his boot to catch. He climbed, splinters brushing his palms, and stepped onto the roof. A sagging sheet of tin funneled a slow trickle of rainwater toward a gutter. He knelt, lifted the tin, and wedged a broken beam beneath it to keep the surface level. Clouds shifted in thick folds above, threatening to hide the eclipse completely, yet a pale crescent still burned through the thinning vapor.
He set a narrow glass pan on the flat roof so the sky would reflect inside it, hoping to watch the changing shape without staring upward. A fragment of breeze nudged the pan toward the gutter; he slid it back, then straightened. Wind gusted again. This time the beam slipped, the tin dipped, and water spilled across the roof. The shallow pan skidded, hit a loose nail, flipped, and landed upside-down in the gutter below with a sharp clink. Milo exhaled, lowered himself after it, and retrieved the now empty vessel. Cold metal touched his fingertips, tangible and slick.
While he wiped the rim, a break appeared in the clouds. Sunlight streamed through, struck the gutter puddle, and threw a bright ring onto the surface. Roof, water, and sky combined to mimic a perfect circle of fire rippling under his kneeling stance. He tilted the pan beneath the gutter; the ring slid smoothly into the glass, hovering there like a captive halo. Wind eased, the clouds merged once more, and the image dimmed, yet the unexpected reflection lingered inside the pan for several breaths before fading. Pale light rested on the quiet pond.
