Afternoon light filled the small town stadium seats.

Milo held a paper plate with hot pizza.

Lines of melted cheese slid toward the plate edge.

He wanted a seat before the baseball game began.

He spotted three empty rows near the front barrier.

He stepped down narrow stairs between noisy fans.

A foul ball from warmup skipped across the sky.

Fans pointed up, then laughed as it landed far behind.

A shoe stuck against sticky soda on the next step.

His body tipped; the plate tilted in a quick slide.

Melted cheese stretched, then dropped onto a catcher bag below.

The bag rolled, knocked a spare baseball onto the stairs.

That ball bounced, struck a drum, and startled nearby pigeons.

Wings fluttered around Milo, but he balanced the plate.

He placed pizza on the empty row and chased the ball.

The ball stopped beside the umpire’s genuine leather glove.

Milo scooped it, handed it back, and received a nod.

He returned to his seat and lifted the safe slice.
