Late afternoon light settled over the small seaside park. Leo balanced the worn bat above his shoulder, then swung; wood hit leather with a clean pop. The baseball arched past the low fence and bounced once on the footpath. It rolled toward the wooden pier, which stretches above calm water. No ball had ever reached the pier before. He sprinted after it, glove already on his left hand. Thin clouds have gathered over the sea all afternoon. Salt air brushed his cheeks, and distant gulls crossed the dim sky. The damp boards ahead smelled of wet pine while a loose flyer rattled against a lamp post.

A sudden burst of wind strengthened without warning. The baseball was lifted by the gust and spun along the planks. It paused near a street musician beside an open case. A slow tune from a small accordion drifted around his knees. Farther out, a dark back broke the surface; a whale exhaled and sprayed silver mist. The sound made the musician stop, and a resting gull flapped in surprise. Its wing hit the rolling ball again, sending it toward a narrow gap between beams. Leo lunged and slid one foot forward. He trapped the ball inside his glove just before a thin wave lapped the posts. He straightened, sand clinging to his trousers, while the whale slipped beneath quiet water.
