English 原文
Sam stepped into the disused railway shed, afternoon light sliding through cracked panels. Warm dust drifted above his shoes while a ginger cat picked its way along a beam. On the highest shelf, a small wooden cube waited; he needed it to finish a pattern board at home. The shelf had been built by someone who valued height over convenience, and reaching it looked challenging. Rain tapping on the metal roof sounded like brainstorming from an invisible class, each drop suggesting a different route upward. Basic logic pointed toward the rusted ladder in the corner, so he dragged it forward, the cat watching, tail flicking.
Halfway up, a step groaned and bent; he jumped back before it snapped. If the shelf had been lower, the whole task would have ended quickly. Undeterred, he grew resourceful, knotting rope to a garden rake. A quiet debate of claws and paws played out below as the cat blocked the dog's sniffing nose, both animals circling the fallen step. Sam balanced the rake on the rope and swung; the cube rocked but clung to its spot. Another swing nudged it free, yet a sudden draft shoved the cube sideways, where it plummeted into a plastic barrel full of roof water, vanishing with a soft plop.
New resistance rose from the cold surface that shifted whenever his hand touched it. He tested sticks, then tied an old magnet to string, judging angles like pieces in a board game. Each try pulled up leaves instead of wood. Finally, a cluster of tools, fastened into an awkward net, skimmed beneath the water. When the magnet clicked against something solid, he lifted carefully until the cube surfaced, darker and heavier. The sides had swollen; faint lines blurred beyond reading, yet the object still fitted his palm. The cat batted a dripping leaf, the dog sneezed at the spray, and the damp wooden cube lay on the wooden step, edges curling under quiet air.
