Thin dust floated in slanted light, and the faint smell of old pine lingered near the backstage wall. Leo balanced a narrow cart while Maris steadied a bronze statue on it, both standing inside the city amphitheater that time had almost forgotten. Several stone benches had been cracked by decades of rain, yet the raised central slab remained solid. They aimed to elevate the statue onto that slab before noon crowds drifted past the gates. Leo had once measured the distance, but he had not tested the slope. When he rolled the cart forward, its wheels caught a ridge and the statue swayed. Maris pressed both palms against the metal, her shoulders tense, and the cart stopped just short of the edge.

A persuasive tilt of her head pointed toward two spare planks leaning nearby. They slid one plank under the left wheel, raising it slightly; the statue still leaned. If the slab had been level, their task would have finished quickly, yet the ridge kept rejecting every angle. Maris fetched a coil of rope, looped it around the statue’s waist, and anchored the other end to a bench. The first pull shifted nothing. On the second pull, the rope creaked, the wheels jumped over the ridge, and the cart reached the slab. Together they lifted the cold bronze, knees bent, breaths short, and finally set it in place. The figure now stood higher than any seat, its polished surface catching afternoon brightness.

As the weight settled, a hollow clap echoed under the slab, and one corner of stone flipped upward. Inside the revealed gap lay a tin box. Leo pried it open; tarnished tickets and dull coins rolled across his palm. Each coin had once been a quiet contribution, proof of forgotten generosity that still waited beneath the dust. They slid the box back, closed the stone, and stepped away. Light from the high window rested on the empty stage.
