Morning light spilled between thin trunks at the edge of a grove. A small lark flitted from branch to branch, carrying a single dry twig. The bird flew toward a half-built nest that sat high above a sandy path. Warm air smelled of pine resin, while distant insects hummed under the leaves. Yet the branches near the nest were sparse. Each landing spot wobbled when the lark's feet pressed down. A quick gust arrived and knocked the twig sideways, dropping it onto the ground below. The small lark descended, its wings beating in short bursts. Another breeze rolled dust across the twig, hiding it among pebbles that have already covered scattered seeds.

By the time the twig was found, stronger wind had risen. The twig had been dropped once already, so its surface showed tiny cracks. The lark gripped the piece crosswise in its beak, but lifting straight up no longer worked. Instead, it glided low through the grove, using tree trunks as shields, then climbed sharply toward the nest. At that instant, a rare visitor passed along the path. A zebra that had escaped a nearby wildlife farm brushed the branch supporting the nest. The sudden contact shook the structure and tilted the landing spot sideways. The lark flared its wings, settled on the zebra's broad back, and waited until the branch steadied. With a quick jump, the bird launched again, pressing the cracked twig into the warm nest. The zebra munched dry grass nearby, then turned away, leaving only rustling leaves and soft wingbeats above. Light shifted across the grove, and the branch no longer swayed.
