Morning light lay across damp soil, and soft air smelled of cut grass. Leo carried a small basket into the garden. He hoped to collect ripe strawberries for his younger sibling. Several berries had been hidden under wide leaves that brushed his sleeves while he knelt. The path, made of old boards, felt slick from last night’s rain. His shoes slid awkwardly at each short step. As he reached for the first berry, a playful squirrel sprang onto the board. It twitched its tail near his fingers. The animal grabbed a bright berry and dashed toward the fig tree. Leo has already filled half the basket, yet the squirrel kept circling, ready for another grab.

A patient mentor, the neighbor, once showed Leo how to protect fresh fruit. He slid the basket under an overturned clay pot that rested nearby. Only a narrow gap remained for air. The squirrel jumped back, puzzled by the barrier. It turned its attention to a fallen acorn instead. With the animal distracted, Leo stepped toward the last strawberry. The damp board cracked beneath his heel. He staggered, and his hand pressed into the soil. A tiny toy car lay there, its paint faded to gray. The car had belonged to his sibling last summer, and no one had noticed it missing. Leo placed the dusty car beside the safe basket and then carried both items toward the house. Behind him, the garden stayed quiet while the squirrel chased rolling acorns along the wet boards.
