English 原文
Late afternoon light slanted through the arched windows of the town library, outlining long tables and rows of shelves. One reader near the entrance turned a newspaper with slow care, while the rest of the hall remained contemplative and still. Nora stepped inside, tightening her scarf and scanning upward toward a narrow balcony where a thin red notebook rested. She had left it there during the morning rush and now wanted it back before the building closed.
A folding ladder leaned against the balcony rail. Its aluminum frame rattled as she set a boot on the first rung. Dust rose in a lazy column and seemed to hover beneath the skylight. Halfway up, the ladder paused; a stiff hinge refused to lock. Nora shifted her weight, pressed again, and the metal snapped into place with a dry click. From below, the newspaper rustled, then silence returned. She climbed the last steps and reached for the notebook, fingers brushing the cover.
Before she could lift it, a sudden gust squeezed through the open ventilator above the stacks. The wind flipped pages of an atlas on the nearest table; they flapped randomly like loose wings. The movement startled a small bat that had been dozing behind a curtain near the ceiling. It burst into view, skimmed past Nora’s shoulder, and wheeled across the amber light. Startled, she withdrew her hand and steadied the rail. The ladder rocked; one rubber foot slid an inch, then halted against a floorboard seam. Overhead, the bat circled twice, its dark body cutting tiny spirals through drifting motes.
Nora waited until the air calmed. Paper settled, and the bat slipped through a gap beside the skylight, leaving the room quieter than before. She picked up the notebook, folded it under an arm, and started down. The stiff hinge pinched again; she nudged it with her heel, and the ladder folded smoothly. On her way out, she noticed fresh dust on her sleeve and brushed it off with a quick swipe. Fine dust settled among the silent books.
