The marine biologist had tracked the moon charts, expecting extra-wide tide pools exposed for only thirty minutes. Between them, vivid kelp nodded in the current while tiny splashes echoed against granite. A single verdant mat of algae shimmered farther out, and she marked its position with a quick photograph. Her goal: scrape a pure strand before the returning swell buried the sample beneath restless sand and foam.

She stepped onto the first shelf, but slick moss shifted under her boot, forcing her to spread arms wide. After regaining balance, she crouched and dipped a glass jar, yet ripples muddied the water and clouded visibility. Crabs skittered across the rim, tapping the glass until she withdrew; their sudden movement broke the fragile surface calm. She let her gaze linger on a narrower pool nearby, noticing clearer water and fewer shadows shifting beneath. Sliding sideways, she lowered the jar again, this time angling the mouth with the flow, and green filaments entered smoothly. When she straightened, a sudden clack underfoot revealed a shell rocking against stone, disturbed by her weight.

At first the object looked ordinary, yet a faint violet gleam flickered inside its ridged opening with each small wave. Curiosity overcame slippery footing, and she knelt again, prying the halves apart to reveal a tiny glass bead. The bead had once formed part of a bracelet; corrosion marked the wire still threaded through its center. Years of rolling water had polished every edge, turning lost jewelry into something almost mineral. A distant horn signaled the incoming tide; foamy water already lapped the first shelf while gulls circled overhead.
