Bright noon light spilled over the quiet beach. Liam and Zoe knelt near the waterline, shaping towers for their sandcastle. It was the fourth morning of their vacation. They wanted this castle to stand taller than any yesterday. They have already pressed a generous ring of wet sand around the base. A moat was dug beside them by their careful hands. The ubiquitous cry of gulls drifted above, while the breeze kept trying to steal their straw hats. Liam held a thin stick with a ribbon that would serve as a flag. Each time he raised it, the ribbon gave a sharp flutter and slipped from his grip. At the same moment, the tide pushed forward and washed against the lowest wall. Water cut small channels through the fresh sand.

Zoe scooped another bucket, but her spade struck something hard. She cleared more sand, and a small rusty tin appeared. The box looked like a present from the sea, wrapped only in salt. They pried the lid open. Inside lay smooth shells arranged in a neat spiral. Someone else had placed them long ago. A wave reached their ankles, reminding them of the unfinished castle. Liam switched plans. He carried the tin to higher ground, then signaled Zoe to rebuild the back wall farther inland. With both of them lifting and packing, the castle rose again. At last the ribbon perched on the tallest tower and began to flutter in the stronger wind. Foam hissed around the moat and gull wings crossed the bright sky.
