Marcos tugged a length of pale twine over the lowest branch of an apple tree, its bark slick from the misty morning. Lila steadied the ladder behind him, the basket of small copper chimes pressed against her hip. The orchard looked tranquil, yet every leaf carried a shining bead of water. Sparrows darted between rows in search of the plentiful fallen fruit; they landed frequently on the path, then flicked away at the faintest crunch of boots. The pair worked in quiet rhythm—Marcos looping the twine, Lila passing each bell. When he nudged the branch a little harder to tighten the knot, the wood bent, sighed, and sprang back farther than he expected.

The sudden rebound shook three ripe apples loose. They tumbled into the high grass, rolling to a stop beside a clump of creeping thyme whose blossoms held a faint purple allure for nearby insects. A hidden rabbit bolted from the rustling grass, streaking toward the greenhouse fence. Its hind feet drummed against loose boards, and the vibration carried along the frame until a stack of garden stakes toppled. The stakes struck a stand of dandelions; spheres burst, releasing a froth of white seeds that lifted on the damp air like tiny lanterns. The drifting cloud squeezed through the half-open greenhouse window, swirling above trays of fresh potting mix.

Lila hurried after the seeds, but moisture had swollen the wooden sash; her first shove barely moved it. She braced her shoulder, gave a second push, and the pane groaned downward, narrowing the gap. Many of the fluffy parachutes bumped against the glass and floated back outside, though some still spiraled onto the soil. Marcos arrived with a cloth, waving gently to coax the last seeds toward the open door. The orchard resumed its slow breathing: chimes clinked, leaves dripped, and the rabbit crouched once more among the thyme. A lone seed spun along the rim of a black plastic tray.
