English 原文
Elias heaved the warped wooden gate aside and stepped onto the cracked courtyard tiles. Rainwater from last night still mirrored the leaning towers of the nearby coastal fortress. He crouched beside a narrow stone channel, planning to guide the stagnant pools toward an old drain. The channel, once a proud landmark for travelers, was now hidden under sand, moss, and broken pottery. With a flat stick he scraped at the packed debris, yet the water barely shifted. Cold salt air drifted over the wall and carried the scent of wet iron. Sea birds circled overhead, their calls echoing between empty arches.
Elias filled a dented bucket from one puddle and poured the water straight into the blocked groove. The liquid swirled once, then stalled against a root knot as rigid as a stone sentry. He jabbed at it with the stick, yet nothing loosened under the stubborn tangle. Next he pried out one loose brick that had been wedged across the channel years earlier. Water rushed forward, hit the gap, and shot beneath the courtyard wall in a surprise burst. Behind the thick stones, an unseen clay pipe cracked, sending a louder jet toward a weathered guardian sculpture. The jet bounced off the statue’s chest and splashed across the inner parapet like quicksilver.
The unexpected spray soaked a pile of dry leaves, and the thin raft of foliage drifted along the stone floor. A small breeze slipped through broken arrow slits, driving the wet leaves toward a rusty hinge below the outer gate. As the hinge sagged under the soaked leaves, it lowered a plank that still guarded the drain. Elias stepped back quickly, then pressed a flat stone into the groove before the new surge escaped the courtyard. The cushion of water thinned, but the channel stayed open, revealing the path carved beneath the landmark walls. Rainwater drummed against the improvised stone dam and spilled in a thin sheet across the mossy step.
