Her shoulders stiffened, and she braced one boot on the frame before prying harder. The clump shifted at last; a sudden gush leapt from the gutter and raced along the glass channels. The day’s unexpected heroine grabbed an old towel from a hook and dropped it across the doorway. Fabric swelled as the stream struck, but the thick fibres slowed the flow. She folded the edge twice, raising a shallow barrier that directed the water into a spare plastic barrel. Water thudded into the barrel, pale foam swirling across the rim while litres continued to gather. Thin streams hurried through the towel's weave and dripped steadily into the waiting barrel below.
