Marc pushed the wooden shed door with his shoulder, sending a dusty ray of noon light across stacked surfboards. He and Lina had promised the beach club they would move the boards outside before the weekend contest. Marc’s enthusiasm showed in the quick way his hands flew from rope to rope while Lina steadied the nearest pile. Several cracked boards had been hidden behind a faded banner that pictured a laughing surfer. When Marc tugged one edge, the banner slipped and a board slid forward, knocking a metal bucket. The bucket rolled, struck a broom, and the broom handle tapped a loose paddle leaning near the wall.

The paddle bumped a shelf of wax tins, and each tin bounced like a domino onto the next. Their friendship had survived bonfires and rainstorms, yet it tightened now around a single question: keep pressing or pull back? Lina stepped forward and tried to catch the last tin, but the longboard beside her tilted, dropping a coil of rope. The dangling rope yanked a small dive flag from its hook; the flag fluttered down and covered Marc’s face. If the rope slipped again, the ongoing chain of hits would reach the glass window at the back.

Lina dropped to one knee, dived beneath a wobbling board, and wedged her shoulder against it. The sudden block stopped the board, but the rolling bucket still spun toward the window. Marc lunged, planted both palms on its rim, and diverted it toward the doorway. The metal scraped over the threshold and rattled into the sand, where two loose shells spun away from its path. One shell arced toward the water tub and clinked against its rim, while the other shell curved back inside the shed; its mottled spiral whirled across the dusty planks toward the sunlight outside.
