Elise balanced on a low wooden bench beneath the library skylight, holding a bright paper mobile made of thin, shining circles. Marco, the chief contributor during yesterday’s craft hour, kept the string free of knots and searched for a way to attach the mobile to a narrow ceiling beam. Sunlight drifted through dusty glass; somewhere farther back, an air vent hummed without rhythm. Elise hoped the swirling colors would spark curiosity in tomorrow’s visitors, yet the beam still stood above her reach. From her perception, the mobile belonged up there already, but the bench added only a handspan of height. The novelty of the spinning shapes pulled gently under their own weight, brushing her cheek each time she stretched. She stepped down, rolled her shoulders, and both teenagers scanned the room. A tall broom leaned behind the returns desk, its handle smooth from years of quiet sweeping, and a small metal hook had been fixed to the beam long ago, waiting for something light.

Marco lifted the broom toward Elise, but the handle slipped through her fingers on the first try. Dust on the varnish stole momentum from her grip, and the mobile swung sideways, tiny rings clinking. She wiped her palm on her jeans, climbed again, and used the broom as a makeshift arm to push the loop of string over the forgotten hook. The loop caught, then slid off when a vent above released a sudden warm puff. Resistance returned. Elise planted her feet wider and tried a new angle; Marco braced the bench with both hands. Just as the string finally held, an automatic sprinkler head clicked alive—an unexpected test cycle—spraying a narrow arc across the corridor. Neither teen spoke; they blinked through the spray and dragged the bench back so the mobile could hang beyond the reach of water.
