A glossy crow hopped onto the campus path and tapped its beak against a loose white thread. The thread hung from a backpack carried by a student; each eager step made the small knot jerk and tighten. Noon heat rose from the stones, and an intense patch of light flashed across the bird’s feathers. Several crumbs have already fallen, so brown ants dotted the gaps between tiles. A faint mix of cut grass and distant clock chimes drifted through the still air.

The crow gripped the thread and pulled hard. Fabric hissed, the knot slipped free, and a cloth pouch inside the backpack opened. A green apple tumbled out, rolled across the path, and bumped a dozing squirrel near the hedge. The squirrel sprang aside, its tail lashed, and dry leaves flew upward. Startled pigeons, which had been resting beside a bench, burst into flight; their wings beat low air onto a row of copper leaves. For a moment the scattered motion failed to make sense, then each creature’s movement formed a lasting circle of ripples through the quiet courtyard.

A small gust arrived from the library wall and pushed the runaway apple toward a thick root. The fruit wedged there, juice shining where the skin split, and the rolling stopped. Above it, pigeons kept wheeling; feathers drifted in slow spirals over the quiet apple.

一陣小風自圖書館牆邊吹來，把逃跑的蘋果推向粗根。果實卡在那裡，裂開的皮閃著汁光，滾動就此停止。上方的鴿子仍在盤旋；羽毛在靜靜的蘋果上方慢慢旋落。
