What the Wind Lifted- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

Light from a cracked roof panel fell in tall stripes. The dusty art room now looked like a small cathedral.

Leo stood beside a wooden display table where an old model fortress waited under a thick canvas cover. Years of chalk dust had settled on the cloth. Its weight pressed the cloth down. A cold spring wind slid through a broken pane and tugged at the far corner. Leo wanted the model for today's sketch, so he caught the edge and pulled. The weight stayed firm. The cloth barely rose. He braced a boot, pulled harder, and felt the wind push against him instead. After two tries, he had to kneel, breathing in the dry smell of paper and stone.

A loose rope hung from a ceiling beam. At some time it had held stage lights. Imagination flickered when Leo noticed the rope drift toward the fluttering corner. The wind was already lifting that edge. Perhaps it could lift more. He looped the rope through a grommet, opened the pane wider, and stepped back. The wind billowed under the canvas, turning it into a sail. Its own force rose against its weight, and the cover climbed off the model like a slow balloon. The movement cleared the fortress, yet the sudden gust knocked over a jar of charcoal sticks. Black dust rolled across the floor in a line that resembled a sacred path between scattered sketches. Loose pages twist on the floor. A faint draft keeps them moving in slow circles.

里奧站在木製展示桌旁，一座舊模型要塞被厚重帆布蓋住。多年來的粉筆灰壓在布面上，使它沉甸甸的；同時，冷冽春風從破窗縫鑽入，扯著帆布遠端。里奧想用模型作今日素描，便抓住邊緣猛拉。重量紋絲不動，布面僅僅抬起。他撐住靴子，再用力，卻被逆風吹回。試了兩次，他只得跪下，吸入紙張與石粉乾燥的氣味。

天花板垂下一條鬆弛的繩索，曾掛過舞台燈。里奧看見繩子被風吹向抖動的布角，腦中靈光一閃。風已經抬起那一角，也許能抬得更高。他把繩索穿過布上的環孔，再把窗縫推得更大，退後幾步。風灌入帆布下方，將它撐成一面風帆；帆布的重量被自己的風力舉起，如慢氣球般滑離模型。要塞終於顯露，但突如其來的陣風同時打翻炭筆罐，黑粉滾過地面，排成像聖壇通道的線條，散落的圖稿互相錯落。地上鬆散紙頁不斷旋轉，微弱氣流讓它們畫著緩慢圓圈。
