Lucas had spent the afternoon inside the old circus wagon, sorting props for tonight’s practice. Thin sunlight mixed with sweet sawdust scent and warmed paint peeling from the walls. He stacked folded scarves along the bench. The last scarf, a faded red handkerchief, clung to a stray white feather that must have fallen from the costumer’s boa. When Lucas flicked the cloth, the feather drifted across the narrow aisle and landed on the nose of a small brass juggler figure that balanced three marbles on a thin rod. The extra weight tipped the figure forward; one marble slid off, struck a row of wooden clubs, and set them rolling toward the open door.

As the clubs rolled, they knocked a striped rubber ball from its dish. The ball gained speed along the slanted floor, bounced once, and reached the junction between two loose boards. The gap acted like a ramp, shooting the ball into the ceramic water jug that the acrobat kept for her dog. The jug wobbled, then water spilled across the dusty planks and raced toward a stack of fragile paper posters. Lucas lunged, grabbed the pile of spare handkerchiefs, and pressed them down to make a quick dam. The cloth swelled but held. Water soaked the dust, washing a wide streak clean. Under the grime, a tiny painted scene brightened: an oasis with blue water and two green palms, probably part of the wagon’s original decoration. Lucas paused, still kneeling, while a thin stream dripped around the barrier and formed a narrow path across the floor. Wet squares of cloth glimmered beside the hidden picture, holding the puddle back.

棒子在地板上翻滾，撞落盤中的條紋橡膠球。球在傾斜的地面加速，彈跳一下後衝到兩片鬆動地板的交界處。那道縫隙像斜坡，把球射向裝給特技犬喝水的陶壺。壺身晃動，接著水潑在滿是灰塵的木板上，直奔一疊脆弱的紙海報。盧卡斯撲上前，抓起一堆備用手帕壓在地上臨時擋水。布料鼓起卻沒被沖開。水浸濕灰塵，沖出一道乾淨痕跡。髒汙下方，一幅小小的畫面亮了起來：藍色水池與兩棵綠棕櫚組成的綠洲，應是車廂最初的裝飾。盧卡斯跪在地上暫停動作，細細水流繞過布壘，在地板上形成細長水道。濕透的布片在隱藏的圖畫旁閃著光，暫時擋住了積水。
