Lena rolled a small wooden ball along the workshop bench. The ball crossed a strip of paper that showed her timeline of earlier trials, then slipped onto a smooth metal chute. Warm sawdust met cool metal, and a faint hum from outside drifted under the door. At the end of the chute, the ball struck a spoon that had been balanced on a peg. The spoon flipped, touching a ruler, and the ruler nudged a painted clay whale toward the edge. A nervous tremor passed through stacked cans beside it, as if warning of trouble. Lena hoped to finish this playful mechanism for the upcoming science display, so she leaned closer, watching each contact.

The whale tipped, dropped into a half-full bucket, and the sudden weight pulled a rope that has been looped around a tiny pulley overhead. The rope yanked a pin from a hinge, freeing a row of domino tiles that tumbled across the bench. The last tile skidded toward a glass jar, but Lena slid a thick sponge into its path. Foam compressed, and the jar stayed upright, though water from the rocking bucket still swung in wide circles. The bench now carried scattered cans, a tilted ruler, and a rope swaying above. Droplets fell, pattering across the paper strip and marching toward the floor.
