Water drummed inside a metal can swinging at Nora's side. She crossed the porch, ready to unwind the hose for the herb boxes along the rail. Zane sat quietly on the step, knees up. A striped cat sprawled beside him to share the last patch of sunlight. They came outside to enjoy the cooler evening, and for a moment only leaves rustled. Beyond the fence, a lawn mower droned steadily. Its low growl mixed with a gentle creak from the empty garden swing. Warm air carried a faint scent of lemons. The rough porch paint grazed Nora's fingertips when she leaned on the post.

Then a sharper gust cut through the yard. It lifted the corner of the checked tablecloth on the picnic table. The cloth snapped and pushed Nora's half-full can against the leg. Water sloshed out, slid across the boards, and immediately soaked the cat's tail. The startled animal sprang up, knocked Zane's ankle, and the boy tipped backward. His heel struck a stack of empty clay pots. The top pot wobbled, tapped the next, and the whole line began to roll toward the edge. Zane twisted his shoulders aside just in time. The rolling pots bumped past him and paused against the porch post. A thin line of soil trailed behind them across the damp boards. He stayed still, watch the last pot spin once before losing speed. Water still glimmered on the planks and the cloth kept flapping. Beside the post, the crooked stack leaned but held its uneven shape.
