A gentle bubble popped inside the small steel pot on the stove. Steam rose and filled the kitchen corner with an aromatic mist. Ivan leaned over the flame, stirring crushed berries into shining sugar. He had prepared the berry mash an hour earlier. He watched the mixture thicken into almost-jelly brightness. Across the table, Hana guided a thin brush along a wooden birdhouse roof. Blue paint followed each stroke like a quiet stream. She timed every line between small pauses, letting colour soak evenly. Muted traffic noise stayed outside the brick walls. Inside, pot bubbles mixed with the soft swish of bristles. Dry warmth from the stove met the fresh smell of pine boards. From time to time, the spoon tapped the pot rim. The afternoon offered an enjoyable hush around their work.

Hana reached for the rinse cup and nudged the paint water toward the stove. The cup tipped, and a bright drop splashed onto the hot burner. The drop flashed into vapour, startling Ivan; his spoon jerked against the pot edge. That jolt sent a ribbon of sweet jelly over the rim and onto the table plank. The syrup rolled downhill because the table, which had uneven legs, slanted left. It reached the birdhouse wall and painted its own glossy stripe across the blue. Hana let out a short laugh, then slid the birdhouse aside and pressed a rag along the spill. Ivan lowered the flame so new waves stayed calm while he wiped the pot rim. Blue stains cooled on the pot rim while sticky lines dried on the birdhouse roof. A faint bubble rose again, and the half-painted roof waited beside the stove.
