Hot, grainy stone tiles pressed against Tara's palms as she knelt by her stall. Each morning she lined up small wax figures on a shallow tray beside bright baskets of fruit. Today the models showed a lone traveler, a dromedary, and a snow-capped mountain. A jar of pale desert sand stood behind them and caught drifting specks of light. By midday the sun poured straight down, and soft wax bowed under that heat. Beyond the awnings the horizon shimmered like water seen through glass.

Steam rose from a kettle at the tea stall and wrapped the lane in humid haze. The sweet smell of roasted almonds mixed with citrus, and loose coins chimed behind the melon stall. A young volunteer stacked crates nearby and slid a wide palm frond across Tara's bench. He hurried off before she could thank him. Tara wedged two thin cane poles through the frond and angled the green sheet above the tray. Sap oozed around the punctures, and the leaf surface darkened, then curled at the edges. She dipped a cloth into cool basin water and spread it over the curling leaf. Drops slid along the warm shield and fell upon the wax traveler, carving a narrow channel. A thin line of melted dye crept toward her sandal and stained the grout red. The added weight dragged the poles sideways, and sunlight spilled through the widening gap. Low heat waves already rippled above the bright stones. The warped leaf flapped once, spraying tiny sparks of steam across the emptied tray.
