Tess walks along the garden path. The sun is warm. Wet earth clings to her shoes. A pink bud stands half open. Petals curl but stay closed. A small bird sits near it. Wings tremble but do not fly. Soft music drifts from a window. Tess stops and listens a moment. The branch above hangs low. It blocks her clear view.

She bends her knees. She slips under the branch. Leaves brush her hair. Now she sees the bud again. The petals spread a little wider. The bird hops higher on the twig. It starts to sing one short note. Wind stirs and lifts its feathers. Tess watches the slow change. She keeps still and quiet. The garden stays bright and alive.
