Sara needed to tighten the hatch bolts, yet two sounds hit her at once: the ferry’s low resonance shook the hatch while a high whistle from a steam valve pierced the air and rattled her screwdriver. Tranquility rarely lasted on this waterfront, but the double blast made the tools jump in her grasp. She twisted around and spotted a square of thick cork packing wedged behind a coil of hose. She peeled it free and pressed it over the hatch like an improvised shield; the cork muffled the low resonance, though the whistle still flicked across the deck.
