Cora wedged a notebook under the bottle, slowing the flow, then pushed the poster tube onto a higher shelf. The spider slipped behind the radiator grill; the sparrow veered upward and shot into the corridor, beating past metal lockers that answered with a hollow clang. A passing coach swung the door wider, and the gust redirected the water stream away from nearby sockets until only scattered drops clung to the chrome rim. He closed the window firmly before crossing the hall again. Outside, a grey pigeon on the playground fence tilted its head at the sudden stillness. The pigeon lifted off and skimmed above the silver railing toward the vegetable patch.
