English 原文
Rough varnish grazed Zara’s fingers as she shifted a wobbling desk, and a high, scratchy trill bounced from the metal radiator beside it. Chairs creaked in reply, lockers further down the corridor boomed when a late bag struck them, and the steady hum of fluorescent tubes draped every pause in thin static. Eli tilted his head to track the rhythm; the burst repeated, lively yet uneven, like chalk tapping glass. At the back of the room a cardboard model of a floodplain vibrated with each pulse—tiny paper trees quivered along a painted shore. The notion that an ordinary cricket could shake so much cardboard drew the pair closer. Loose chalk content rattled inside an eraser when Zara lifted it, but the chirp shifted again, this time under a stack of worksheets.
The bell for next period rang once, then again, slicing their minutes. Eli eased a plastic box from an open drawer, hoping the clear walls might hold the elusive musician. Their first sweep looked like success: the insect sprang into view, wings brushing papers with a dry patter. When Zara lowered the box, the cricket skipped between table legs, and its song ricocheted along the corridor tiles beyond the door. She followed; he circled through the classroom, tapping bins and nudging the floodplain model so the blue paint along its shore cracked. A second attempt used a notebook to steer the chirping body, but one page bent and the sound darted behind the supply closet. After a breath, Eli noticed faint scrapes against a plastic wheel: the school’s lost class-pet cricket sat inside a forgotten toy car, every stroke of its wings hitting the shell and magnifying the noise. He lifted car and cricket together while Zara slid the box beneath. The bell rang a final warning, lockers boomed once more, and a soft chirp echoed behind the closed cabinet.
