The corridor smelled of yeasty rolls, but the classroom doorway breathed out sharp vinegar.

Bram balanced a folded quilt against his shoulder, the cotton carrying a sweetness like warm sugar drifting from the cafeteria. The squares had been stitched by different students, and each released either buttery hints or dusty-library threads of scent. Kira walked beside him, and chalk-heavy air left a powdery taste on her tongue whenever she breathed quickly. The class display needed the quilt before the next bell, so every footstep arrived with clipped urgency. The supply closet beside the board had historically stayed shut, and its warped edge now blocked their progress again. Bram nudged the door with his elbow; a rusty tang burst from the hinge while the panel only inched. He braced a sneaker against the linoleum, pushed harder, and finally the opening widened enough for their shoulders.

They swung the quilt upward, but the loose rod tapped a metal shelf, knocking a neat row of glass jars free. One jar rolled across sticky fruit syrup, gathered speed, and bumped a stack of plastic lunch trays waiting for washing. The trays slid like dominoes across the floor, edges scraping and spreading a peppery plastic smell. The final tray struck a mop bucket hidden beneath rags that filled the air with citrus cleanser. Soapy water splashed over the rim, tracing a sour ribbon toward Bram’s shoes and forcing him to hop back. Kira darted forward, pulling the quilt into a quick cuddle against her chest before the water touched it. That nimble move showed quiet empathy; Bram lifted the bucket handle and slowed the ripple that threatened the fabric. Occasionally the water still slapped the floor, yet the main cascade halted once he wedged the bucket beneath a shelf bracket. Behind them, jars kept spinning, and one cracked, letting a faint mustard aroma rise toward the fluorescent lights. Thin vinegar-streaked liquid spiralled toward the drain beside the corridor wall.
