English 原文
A faint ring of dried glue had darkened Jarvis's catalog slip long before he stepped into the study corner. The slip gave off a sharp smell, and curling edges hid the final digit. A quiet vanilla scent from floor polish hovered above. Jarvis pressed the paper flat against the reading table. Beside him, Zeke breathed in dust that drifted like pepper from nearby reshelving. They aimed for the biography shelves, certain the printout read 823.79, and padded across carpet still soggy from umbrellas shaken earlier. A quarrel of smells—stale coffee, aging paper, lemon polish—hung low and followed their steps. When they reached the listed spot, only a thin outline of dust marked where the book should have rested. Jarvis blinked at the empty gap, then turned the slip; the curled corner revealed a faintly printed six, not a nine. The slip had been printed by the self-service terminal earlier that afternoon.
Warm air from the ceiling vent lifted the slip again. He anchored it under a paperback, changing only the angle of his wrist. Together they moved one aisle left, where a return cart waited beside a step-stool squeaking on tile. A rectangular science kit sat on the cart; a clear plastic flume inside smelled faintly of chlorine, as if washed moments before. Jarvis nudged the cart to search its lower tier, and the boxed flume began a slow tumble onto the carpet without clatter. Under the cart lay the missing book, edges darkened by soil and giving off an earthy tang like a gardener's shed.
Lights in the far wing dimmed, and the final announcement drifted past with a sterile medicinal whiff from the narrowing vents. Far off, a cart rolled toward the exit, and the rubber wheels released a brief burnt-rubber odor. Dusty sweetness from old paper swirled around their knees. Jarvis was reaching through the narrow gap beneath the cart, fingertips brushing the cold cover.
