A fern in a narrow pot brushed his sleeve; its fronds bent, then slowly pushed back upright, a quiet show of resilience. Near the window, a writer balanced a thick notebook on one knee, the pencil tip moving in quick strokes that kept pace with the low buzz of the fluorescent tubes above.

Dale’s elbow nudged a paper clip that slid from the desk and dived into the fern’s soil. A small black beetle crawled out, grains of dirt rolling from its shell. Resourcefulness showed in its steady climb over the smooth shoe rubber of a nearby visitor. The insect reached open floor and wandered beneath the paw of a therapy dog resting beside its handler’s chair. The sudden tickle stirred the dog; it twitched, the leash looped around a metal coat stand tightened, and the stand tilted forward. Hanging jackets swung, pressing the waiting-number basket toward the desk’s edge.

The basket tipped, plastic numbers rattling toward the floor, yet Nora—two spaces ahead in the queue—braced her forearm under the sliding rim just in time. The coat stand rocked back, jackets settling into stillness, and the dog’s tail slowed to a lazy sweep. The beetle disappeared under another row of chairs, leaving only faint ripples in loose dust. Above the quiet shuffle of shoes, the fluorescent tubes kept humming.
