Behind them, a speckled spaniel brushed linoleum whenever the queue shifted. Petra needed the pen for their grandmother’s insurance number, yet Cole already gripped it for his own pharmacy slip. Both watched orange digits blink forward, knowing a missed call would throw them back into the spiral of waiting.

Petra had pressed the tip twice when an abrupt scratch replaced ink; faint grooves now marked the form. The cartridge had been squeezed nearly flat, so flow stopped. Cole tapped the barrel, but nothing appeared. The spaniel’s leash brushed their ankles, its snort drawing a receptionist’s glance. They crouched shoulder to shoulder to discuss a way to finish before the board reached their number. If another visitor arrived needing the same sheet, the only copy would vanish. Under the table they noticed a red toolbox, lid ajar, a forgotten cache of screwdrivers.

Cole chose a thin screwdriver; its handle left gritty dust on his palm. Petra held the pen while he twisted out the tiny spiral spring, eased the clogged tube free, and warmed it between thumb and forefinger until thick blue ink slid forward. They reassembled the pieces and wrote in turns—one line for Petra, one for Cole—keeping the tip moving. A sudden bark from the spaniel jarred Petra’s wrist; a blue blot spread like an uneven cloud over an unused corner. They flipped the sheet, finished both forms, and hurried to the counter just as their shared number flashed. Hours later, after the clinic lights dimmed for nightly cleaning, a lone smudge stained the table edge, and the repaired pen lay beside it, chain slack under the softer glow.
