English 原文
The sharp tang of wet iron clung to Wade’s throat. Beside the main furnace, a deep scratch curved across a half-cooled slab, its edge still granular under his glove.
He traced the gouge with two fingers. Another mark waited on the floor, thinner, bending in the same direction; a third hid under dust near a stack of ingots. Not once did the glow touch the high rafters, yet these pale arcs caught every ember that broke free. Between them lay flakes of scale shaped like narrow petals, and one flake, when he turned it over, revealed a faint lotus embossed by accident of pressure.
The furnace roared with fresh fervor as a new charge dropped. His gloves still warm, Wade pressed against the nearest wall plate. A ridge rose beneath the metal skin, thicker than he remembered, and the slab refused to slide. If the mold were any cooler, the outline would vanish, so he paused, palm absorbing the tremor that spread through the frame in almost exponential bursts. A significant kink near the bottom explained the resistance: the metal had bowed outward. He pushed again, then stepped back, wiping grainy soot across his sleeve instead of forcing the plate.
He turned to fetch a thinner rod, halted, and returned to the scratched slab. The arcs no longer read as random wear; together they formed a circle the size of a shield. At its center, a thumb-high casting, half buried in slag, waited. He rocked it free. The piece showed a tiny armored figure, hands raised, a silent guardian once set to decorate a gate hinge and forgotten when the hinge was melted down. Wade weighed the figurine, then compared its curved back to the lotus flake. The fit was exact: scratch, petal, and ridge mapped the place where the hinge had buckled years ago, each trace building toward this quiet clue.
Heat pricked his cheeks as he walked the figurine to the bench near the furnace, the same bench where the first scratch had caught his eye. Ash still peppered the surface, yet in that ash he now spotted a second lotus outline, faded but complete. He set the guardian beside it and brushed away the loose grey grains.
