English 原文
The square amber token lay flat on the reception desk, but a narrow strip along its edge pulsed honey-light every few seconds. Fluorescent bulbs hummed above the plastic chairs, and antiseptic mixed with a faint caramel aroma from a distant vending machine.
Iris balanced her canvas bag on her knees; thick folders from an academic pursuit at the nearby college pressed against the fabric. Oscar, seated one chair away, kept glancing at the token. The number board behind the pharmacy window skipped from twenty-four to twenty-six, ignoring the silent object. When the board flicked again, Iris rose, yet the clerk waved her back—one blank line on her form required rewriting. She returned, smoothed the sheet on a clipboard, and the pen refused to release from its chain. After a second tug, ink finally marked the page. A framed certificate beside the reception printer caught warm lamplight, giving the corner a quiet sense of achievement without anyone commenting on it. Shelves behind the glass stretched upward, their orderly rows hinting at vast potential storage for bottles and packets.
While they waited, two automatic dispensers worked in harmony, blending soap and water into pale foam each time someone approached the sink. Oscar tapped the token; the light brightened, so Iris turned it over. Tiny metal contacts covered the underside. The object was not a ticket at all—it was the pharmacy’s waiting pager, meant to buzz when medicine stood ready. She pressed the side button; the strip glowed amber, then steadied. A muffled thud came from the vending machine; a coil had rotated, rewarding an unseen customer with a silver packet of crackers. The pager, however, stayed silent. Iris rewrote the last address line, handed the clipboard through the hatch, and the clerk nodded. The board finally jumped to twenty-five. Iris rose, reached back to Oscar, and placed the glowing pager into his open palm.
