English 原文
The label printer buzzed, then stuttered with a short metallic rasp behind the pharmacy window. Glen flinched at the noise and pressed the grey stapler against his claim form. The jaws refused to bite; a single staple shot sideways, pinging against the open service hatch. Outside, a sparrow pecking crumbs on the wheelchair ramp startled at the ping and fluttered upward. Its wings skimmed a rose bush beside the doorway, shaking loose several bright petals. Petals drifted inside, slid over the warm roller, and wedged beneath the advancing label strip. Lights blinked red, and the digital display stopped ticking toward the next number. Glen had tried tape earlier; the jam felt like a landmark mistake everyone now heard.
A soft hush replaced the machine’s groan as the pharmacist muted it and waved two technicians closer, so Glen shuffled aside. At the form table, he copied policy numbers while fluorescent panels above hummed a steady baritone. A jubilant ringtone burst from someone’s pocket, bounced against vinyl chairs, and faded when its owner stepped outside. Glen finished the blanks, moved toward the card reader, and found a queue forming after a girl’s swipe beeped error. He waited, rhythmically tapping the pen chain until Ivy dropped her clipboard and papers scudded across linoleum. They both crouched; Glen gathered pages while Ivy scooped pens, the hallway echoing with quick footfalls and metal latches. Down the corridor, a wall speaker announced visiting hours, its momentous chime rolling like a distant drum. When Glen’s card finally slid cleanly, the reader chimed twice and the hallway felt wider for a breath.
Minutes later, a technician raised the printer cover, twirled forceps, and teased a crumpled rose petal from the feed. The freed roller resumed its spin, tossing fresh labels that pattered onto the counter like distant hoofbeats. The pharmacist pushed Glen's claim forward; someone had left the same grey stapler resting on top. His fingers shifted position this time, thumb at the hinge, wrist loose, pressure balanced across the handle. The staple pierced and folded without a cough, leaving the papers fused in a neat rectangle. Outside the hatch, the sparrow scratched near the ramp rail, wings flicking in quick, uneven beats. The digital display that had stalled before now climbed steadily, its plastic digits blinking toward the next appointment.
