A narrow aisle stretched four steps between Quinn’s vise stand and the drying rack beside the back wall. At the far end, a wide wooden door hung on an iron rail; it drifted left a finger-width every few breaths. Warm sunshine poured through a high window and shrank on the floor as the door moved. Quinn lifted a tray of freshly glued wooden trains, hoping for some quality time to sand their edges later. A long table packed with leather scraps and tin boxes blocked the direct path.

The door rolled farther; its metal wheels screeched and sent a chisel rattling off the table. Quinn saw one opportunity: skirt the table’s safe left side, or crawl beneath the central beam where clamps dangled. The left route looked clear yet slow. Underneath promised speed but risked snags. He ducked, tucked the tray under one arm, and threaded his knees around scattered tools. Canvas strips pinched his sleeve, and a dangling hook tore his cuff—visible cost for the choice. While sliding forward, he spotted a small tin box wedged near the leg; inside lay a lost gouge, a quiet sign of past friendship between two retired carvers. A ripple of dust began to develop behind the tray as he burst into the aisle’s end and raised the trains onto the rack just before the door thudded against its stop. Sunlight kept shifting across the boards, and motes of dust twirled in the narrowing beam.
