Five metal racks stood in a row, each one an arm-length from the basement wall. Joel and Sara moved between them sorting household gifts for the monthly neighborhood charity box. The immense wooden crate near the door held toys. Joel lifted each truck and plane onto the lowest shelf. A faded jacket once worn by a train attendant slipped from Sara’s hands and brushed against her elbow. Dry dust mixed with the faint smell of cardboard hung beneath the low ceiling. Outside the single window, a delivery lift rattled upward toward the street. Its chain drummed softly through the floor.

A sudden knock echoed above, then silence returned, yet the racks wobbled. The freight lift halted halfway; its weight shook the concrete. That tremor pushed a narrow block of pine, which supported the immense crate, a fraction sideways. The heavy crate suddenly tilted toward Joel dangerously. He bent his knees, shifted his grip lower, and angled his shoulder against the panel. Sara slid one foot to the left, gripping the crate’s rim to share the strain. Together they eased the block back under the corner with the edge of a folded magazine. They straightened without spilling a single toy onto the floor. The wobble faded, and sorting continued at a slower rhythm.

Clouds moved across the windowpane, darkening the stacked shelves until color drained from every toy. As Joel reached for another plane, wind pressed through the loose frame and stirred the hanging jacket. Moments later dust rose from the floor in a light swirl. The fine cloud covered the magazine edge and the steady crate.
