A wet slap echoed as violet dye dripped from a cargo hose onto the tiled platform. Thick liquid pooled, its surface swirling under slow pressure from the still-running pump. Faye spotted her sketch folder on a bench beyond the widening stain; the next train would splash straight through if the dye reached the track edge. Between her and the bench stood a janitor’s trolley loaded with buckets and a rolled poster from an old science presentation.

She tried to organize the loose mops leaning across the trolley, yet the trolley refused to roll; one wheel jammed against moss growth along the drainage groove. The dye spread another tile, glossier now, and lapped against Faye’s boot. Two routes appeared: squeeze behind the trolley through an adequate gap, safe but slower, or climb over the buckets before the dye thickened further. She planted one foot on the rim of a bucket and vaulted. Buckets clattered, dye splashed, and her sneakers soaked up violet streaks. Landing beside the bench, she grabbed the folder just as liquid seeped beneath the wooden slats. A small metal tin, shaken loose from the trolley, rolled nearby; inside lay crumpled pages of forgotten travel recommendations spotted with purple dots. She tucked the tin under her arm and stepped back. The dye continued to creep toward the track edge. A low rumble from an incoming train vibrated under her stained shoes.
