Three narrow tiles lay between the stove’s front leg and the bread box. A small lizard paused on the middle tile, its toes lifting quickly from the warm surface. Metal tapped metal, the bowl of the spoon bumped the kettle, and warm water inside rocked like a tiny ocean. Steam slipped out through the spout, rose, and clouded the lower part of the window. Beads formed, joined, and crawled downward. One drop fell onto the lid of a jar that sat on the counter; the cool glass pinged under the sudden heat.

The lizard shifted closer and brushed the spoon again, harder this time. The spoon swung wider, struck a wire strainer, and the strainer slid across a plate where a pat of butter had begun to soften. The butter bent, turned glossy, and gradually spread toward the plate’s edge. Seeds from yesterday’s loaf rolled with it; they gathered in the yellow pool like an island in calm water. The pool reached the hot stove ring and hissed. The surface looked peaceful for a breath, then another drop from the fogged window landed in the butter, and tiny bubbles burst.
